a4ESSOR recently celebrated a significant milestone, 15 years of innovation and collaboration towards interoperability in tactical communications. The anniversary event, held at the Eurosatory exhibition in June 2024, was an occasion that brought together the partners of a4ESSOR, OCCAR as the client organization, and members of the press to commemorate the rich history and promising future.
The main goal for a4ESSOR in the past 15 years has been to develop one waveform, ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform, that can be ported to national software-defined radios, sharing the same architecture. This unique approach means that any nation can use its own radio and be interoperable with other nations in their communications.
During the anniversary event, the significance of a4ESSOR and the ESSOR programme was highlighted through many milestones that have been achieved over the years. The milestones that were looked back on included development and publication of the ESSOR Architecture, a project to improve the operational capabilities of the High Data Rate Waveform, Germany joining the ESSOR programme, development project for new waveforms, several interoperability tests, and the adoption of ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform as NATO STANAG in 2023. All are highlights that have built a foundation for future development, growth, and success.
Throughout the years and milestones, a4ESSOR has developed into something that that is more than a sum of its parts. It is a tight-knit partnership that delivers a unique solution to meet the needs of European nations and defence forces. There are six technical teams spread across six different nations working as one. This combination of the best competences from the best of the defence industry, is delivering something unprecedented.

a4ESSOR is committed to driving innovation in the defence industry, and as Lino Laganà, President and General Manager of a4ESSOR, noted, “Through our unique partnership and approach we are laying the foundations for the future European army, which is something that we strongly need today, more than ever.”
